Where To Celebrate Juneteenth 2023 in DFW

Juneteenth commemorates the spread of freedom throughout our country and originated on June 19, 1865. On that day, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to share the news with the last of enslaved peoples in the US that they had been declared free. So where can you celebrate Juneteenth National Independence Day this year? We’ve listed just a few of the many Juneteenth events happening around town, below. Pick one or more below to join in the celebration!


The Colony

Grandscape Juneteenth Celebration (5725 Grandscape Blvd., The Colony) Sunday, June 18, 6:00–9:00 PM

Bring your family and friends for a special remembrance and celebration of freedom at the Grandscape Juneteenth Celebration. Enjoy delicious food, shop at black-owned small business pop-ups, and watch performances onstage. This event is free.


Denton

Denton’s Juneteenth Celebration (Fred Moore Park, 500 S Bradshaw, Denton)Friday, June 16, 5:00-10:00 PM and Saturday, June 17, 10:00 AM–10:00 PM

Enjoy a weekend full of festivities at Denton’s Juneteenth Celebration! Browse a variety of vendors and food truck options, listen to live music, and enjoy softball and basketball tournaments. This event is free.

Denton also hosts a Juneteenth Parade on Saturday, June 17 at the Denton Civic Center from 7:30 AM–12:00 PM.


McKinney

Juneteenth Celebration (Finch Park, 301 Standifer St., McKinney) Saturday, June 17, 4:00–10:00 PM

The City of McKinney is hosting a free Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 17. The city describes the event as “a day of cultural experiences, learning and fun for the whole family.” The day’s festivities include talks, a kids’ zone, live entertainment, food and more. 


Plano

1. Juneteenth Parade (corner of Avenue I and 13th, Plano) Saturday, June 17, 2:00 PM

2. Re-opening of the Plano African American Museum (900 13th St., Plano), Saturday, June 17, 2:00-7:00 PM 

Collin County's only museum dedicated to Black history hosts a soft reopening for the public. Visitors can explore the restored Thornton House and take in the exhibit titled "This is  Douglass: Faith, Family, Forever."

3. Juneteenth 2023 Fashion Show (Legacy Hall Box Garden, 7800 Windrose Ave., Plano), Sunday, June 18, 7:00 PM (doors open at 6:30)

Legacy Hall in the Box Garden hosts a special Juneteenth fashion experience celebrating Black Excellence, Culture, and Freedom. Emceed by award-winning fashion designer Venny Etienne (Project Runway Season 17) and radio personality Lady Jade, this event will honor both local and nationally recognized Black designers and creatives, entertainers, and more. Take in the show, and enjoy a prize raffle and opportunities to shop featured brands after the show. 


Dallas

1. Juneteenth 4K Walk and Freedom Festival (Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 2922 MLK Jr. Blvd., Dallas) Saturday, June 17, 8:30 AM–1:00 PM

Join the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center for its 2023 Juneteenth 4K Walk and Festival. Begin the morning with a 4K walk before enjoying a community festival with live entertainment, vendors and free children’s activities. The festival is free to attend.

2. North Texas Juneteenth Celebration (William Blair Jr. Park, 3000 Municipal St. Dallas, Texas) Saturday, June 17, 12:00–10:00 PM

This event features local black-owned vendors, live entertainment, concessions, health and beauty expos, tech and panel discussions related to personal and community advancement, kid-friendly activities, and more. All programs and activities are free and open to the public. 

3. Dallas Juneteenth Festival (Lofty Spaces - 816 Montgomery Street, Dallas) - Sunday, June 18, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM

Bring the whole family to the Dallas Juneteenth Festival, featuring live performances, dancers, food, art, music, scholarships and more! Tickets start at $5 and can be purchased here.


Fort Worth 

Opal’s Walk for Freedom (Evans Avenue Plaza, 1050 Evans Avenue, Fort Worth) - Monday, June 19 at 10:00 AM

Join Dr. Opal Lee’s Walk for Freedom, an annual 2.5-mile walk that recognizes the two-and-a-half years it took for the news of freedom to reach all enslaved people in the U.S.. Participants can walk in-person or virtually. Find more info and register here.
