Start Up
We all worship something. Worshiping in the most literal sense means valuing something so highly we give our hearts to it. This weekend, we talked about worshiping in the Spirit—how the Holy Spirit wants to produce a heart of praise if we open our lives up to Him.
- What does our culture tend to worship? What things do we value so highly we are prone to give our hearts to it?
- What has been your church experience with worship? Is the worship portion of service at Chase Oaks different than what you grew up with? If yes, how?

- What is God looking for according to this passage? Why is worship so important to God?
- What does it mean to worship the Father in Spirit and in truth?
- Is there anything other than God that you are prone to worship? Share with the group.
- We often think of worship just as singing, but it’s not just that. At its core, what is worship really? And what are other ways besides singing that we can worship?
- Where or in what ways have you experienced meaningful worship? Is it primarily singing, music, or in some other way?
- On a scale of 1-10, how would you describe the current state of your worship life, with 1 being non-existent and 10 being fully open, expressive, and engaging? Why did you pick that number?
- What keeps you from fully engaging God in worship, particularly during church services?
- What would it look like for you to open yourself up more to God’s Spirit in worship in your life? What about during church services? Share a specific step.
Psalm 46 is a hymn that recognizes God as a strong fortress in the middle of a chaotic world. Read it together.
- Worship songs can help us re-orient our perspectives and remember what is true. From what you see in this Psalm, how would you describe the situation the writer is facing? How does this hymn re-orient and remind him of truth?
- Can you think of a time where a song helped you during a difficult time? Why did the words resonate with you so much?
