DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
"What God Says About Romance"
Choose the questions for your group; no pressure to use all of them.
Start Off
- Let’s begin our time by acknowledging the presence of God in our Group. Open in prayer, asking for a greater awareness that God is in the room in a special way as we meet.
- To kick off our discussion, what is a desire in your life that is good in itself but could become unhealthy if it controlled you?
- For a quick summary of the message, you can take turns reading the summary and key thoughts from the “Sermon Notes” section on the main page of the Chase Oaks App.
Reflect on God’s Word
- Read 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. What stands out to you from this passage?
- How can something be permissible but still not beneficial?
- What do you think it means for desire to become a “god” in someone’s life?
Go Deeper
- What stood out to you most from the message, and why?
- What desire is hardest for you to keep out of the “driver’s seat”?
- How does the question “How can I love?” change the way we approach relationships?
- Where might God be inviting you to surrender a desire to him?
Wrap Up
- What was a win for today’s meeting? Where did we see the Holy Spirit show up?
- Go around and share things you are thankful for as well as prayer requests, and close in prayer together: “God, you created my desires, and I don’t want them to become my master. Help me submit my desires to your truth, wisdom, and love, and let Jesus—not my desires—be in the driver’s seat.”
VERSE TO MEDITATE ON AND MEMORIZE THIS WEEK
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. (1 Corinthians 6:12, NIV)
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE (BETWEEN MEETINGS)
Day 1 — Identify the Driver
Read 1 Corinthians 6:12.
What desire is most likely to take the driver’s seat in my life? Pray: “God, show me where my desires are controlling me.”
Day 2 — Ask a Better Question
Read Proverbs 14:12 again.
Before acting on a strong desire today, pause and ask: “What is what I want doing to me? Is it making me healthier, freer, more loving, and more like the person God created me to be?”
Day 3 — Practice Self-Control
Read Galatians 5:22-23 a third time.
Identify one person you could grow closer to through a shared purpose. Invite them to serve, join a group, study Scripture, or pursue something that helps both of you grow.
Day 4 — Choose Love
Read Philippians 2:3-4.
Think of someone going through a difficult season. Don’t just say, “Let me know if you need anything.” Take initiative and do something tangible to help.
Day 5 — Surrender Your Desires
Read Romans 12:1-2.
Spend time reflecting on the truth that God wants to be with you and for you. Then ask him to help you become that kind of friend to others.
