DISCUSSION QUESTIONSChoose the questions for your group; no pressure to use all of them.Have you ever had a personal brush with death or known someone who has (e.g. serious accident, major illness or injury, loss of a loved one, etc.)? How did it affect your outlook on life or the afterlife? John Burke researched over 1,000 near-death experiences (NDEs) that all point to similar themes: out of body experiences, beauty in new dimensions, recognizing people in heaven, being met by a Being of Light, life reviews, and overwhelming love. Which of these stand out to you the most, and why? Do you find accounts of NDEs credible or helpful when thinking about the afterlife? Why or why not? Read the following passages one a time, and after each passage, discuss how those verses describe Heaven and what happens after death: 2 Corinthians 12:2-4, 1 Corinthians 2:9, John 14:2-3, and Isaiah 6:1-4 Burke argues that NDEs align with biblical truths. Do you agree? Why or why not? One of the common aspects of NDEs is a life review, where people see scenes from their life and the impact of their actions. What is one scene from your life that you think would come up in your life review? Jesus said in John 14:2-3 that he is preparing a place for us. What do you think that means, and what emotions does that stir in you - comfort, curiosity, fear, hope, etc.? If you had a near-death experience and saw the things John and the Bible talk about, how might that change how you live your life today? Are there any steps you feel prompted to take in your relationship with God after hearing this message? Maybe something with the “Verse of the week” or from the “Put it into practice” sections? Invite group members to share prayer requests and take time to thank God for the hope of eternal life. VERSE TO MEDITATE ON AND MEMORIZE THIS WEEKNo eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him. But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. (1 Corinthians 2:9-10) PUT IT INTO PRACTICE (IN BETWEEN MEETINGS) For more resources on the topic of near-death experiences, explore John Burke’s podcast and one of his other websites. As you think of your life review, what kind of legacy do you want to leave behind, and how are you working toward that now? Is there someone you think would be interested in hearing this message? Forward a link to our website and invite them to watch or hear the message and then grab coffee to talk about it. Would you like to receive this Group Guide via email each week?
