DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
"Unexpected Prayer"
Choose the questions for your group; no pressure to use all of them.
Start Off
- Let’s begin our time by acknowledging the presence of God in our Group. Consider opening your time by listening to the song “Good Good Father” and reflecting on the lyrics.
- For a quick summary of the message, you can take turns reading the summary and key thoughts from the “Message Notes” section on the main page of the Chase Oaks App.
- Announcement: We’re having a Prayer and Worship Night on 11/8 from 5–6:30 PM at the Legacy Campus. Childcare is free but you’ll need to register. Want to go together as a Group?
- We are starting a series on prayer. What comes to mind when you think about prayer? Does it feel like a conversation, a responsibility, a ritual, or something else?
Reflect on God’s Word
- Read Luke 11:1–2 and John 1:12. Jesus teaches us to begin our prayers by addressing God as “Father.” How does knowing you are a child of God affect the way you approach him?
- Read Hebrews 4:16. What makes it difficult for us to approach God boldly? What would help you pray more confidently?
- Read Matthew 6:5–8. Have you ever felt pressure to use the “right” words when praying? How might this passage encourage us to be more authentic in our prayers?
- Read Luke 11:9–13. How can approaching prayer with expectation, truly believing our Father hears us and answers us, change our view and practice of prayer?
Go Deeper
- The message described prayer as bold, authentic, and expectant. Which of these comes most naturally to you, and which is most challenging?
- How comfortable are you being honest with God about your doubts, frustrations, fears, or disappointments? What makes honesty in prayer difficult? · Read 1 Thessalonians 5:17. What is one ordinary part of your daily routine where you could develop a more consistent, ongoing conversation with God?
Wrap Up
- What was a win for today’s meeting? Where did we see the Holy Spirit show up?
- What is one thing you want to bring to your Father in prayer boldly, authentically, and expectantly this week? Write your prayer request on a small piece of paper or index card, pass it to the person on your left, and take turns praying for each other. You can simply read the request on the card, knowing that you are speaking to your Dad in heaven.
VERSE TO MEDITATE ON AND MEMORIZE THIS WEEK
[Jesus] said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father…’” (Luke 11:2, NIV)
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE (BETWEEN MEETINGS)
Day 1 - Remember Your Identity as God's Child
- Read John 1:12. Spend a few quiet minutes reflecting on what it means to belong to God. Begin your prayer by simply saying, “Father, thank you for welcoming me as your child.” Rest in his love rather than trying to earn his approval. Reflect: How does knowing I belong to God change how I see him?
Day 2 - Pray Boldly
- Read Hebrews 4:16. Bring one concern, need, or decision to God that you have been hesitant to share with him. Ask for help, wisdom, and grace, trusting that you are welcome in his presence. Reflect: What have I been holding back from God?
Day 3 - Pray Authentically
- Read Matthew 6:5–8. Find a private, quiet place and talk to God in your own words. Share what you are really feeling, whether gratitude, fear, confusion, disappointment, or joy. Don't worry about sounding spiritual. Reflect: What would I say to God if I stopped worrying about saying it perfectly?
Day 4 - Pray Expectantly
- Read Luke 11:9–13. Identify one request you need to keep bringing to God. Ask boldly and consider how you can trust his goodness even if his answer differs from your expectations. Continue praying rather than giving up. Reflect: Can I trust God's character even when I don't understand his answer?
Day 5 - Make Prayer An Ongoing Conversation
- Revisit Luke 11:1–2. Talk with God throughout your day, in the car, before a meeting, during a difficult conversation, or when something brings you joy. Offer brief, honest prayers as you go, remembering that your Father is always present. Reflect: What changed when I included God in the ordinary moments of my day?
