God Uses Imperfect Leaders Group Guide

September 2025

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Choose the questions for your group; no pressure to use all of them.

  1. Peter (Park) shared that while growing up, he got teased because of his name. Did you ever get teased for your name or something unique about you? How did that shape you?

  2. Peter (the Apostle) was unqualified by worldly standards. He was uneducated, brash, and impulsive, and yet Jesus invited him to follow. Why do you think Jesus so often chooses unlikely people?

  3. Read Matthew 14:22-33. What things stand out to you about this passage?

  4. What do you notice about Peter’s faith and his doubt, and how does this mirror our own faith journey?

  5. Read Matthew 16:21-23. Jesus rebuked Peter multiple times, including this one. What does this teach us about how Jesus shapes and refines those he loves?

  6. Failure didn’t disqualify Peter; in fact, it prepared him for leadership. How have your own failures (big or small) taught or reshaped you?

  7. Peter Park shared about being in a long “interim” season where God was preparing him. Have you ever experienced a waiting or in-between season? What did God show you in that time?

  8. Peter followed Jesus before he “had it all together.” What step of faith might Jesus be inviting you to take right now, even if you feel unqualified?

  9. Read Romans 8:38-39. How does this truth challenge feelings of being disqualified or separated from God’s love?

  10. As we see in the Apostle Peter’s life, “Failure is never the end. The key is to get back up and continue to follow Jesus.” Where in your life do you need encouragement to get back up and keep following?

  11. Spend some time sharing prayer requests and praises, and then go around and pray for each other.

VERSE TO MEDITATE ON AND MEMORIZE THIS WEEK

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE (BETWEEN MEETINGS)

  1. Take a step of faith: Identify one area where you’ve been waiting to “have it all together.” Instead of waiting, take one small step toward Jesus (e.g., start a prayer habit, invite a friend to church, forgive someone, read a short passage of Scripture).

  2. Embrace imperfection: Each time you stumble or mess up this week, pause and pray, “Jesus, help me get back up and keep following you.” Refuse to let failure keep you stuck.

  3. Reflect on waiting seasons: Journal about a current or past “in-between” season. Ask: What might God be preparing me for? How could this delay be shaping me?

  4. Memorize truth: Meditate on Romans 8:38–39 each day as a reminder that nothing can separate you from God’s love.

  5. Encourage someone else: Share a word of encouragement with someone you know who feels unqualified, overlooked, or like they’ve failed too many times. Remind them God isn’t done with them.
