Fall Kick-Off Group Guide

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Start Off

• Let’s begin our time by acknowledging the presence of God in our Group. We’ll put something in the middle of our circle (like a candle, plant, or small cross) to remind us that God is right here with us. Then, let’s take a few deep breaths and open in prayer.
• Did anyone do any of the five daily practices from the last Group Guide? If so, is there a day that stood out to you?
• For a quick summary of the message, you can take turns reading the summary and key thoughts from the “Sermon Notes” section on the main page of the Chase Oaks App.
• To kick off our discussion, think of a team, club, sport, or event where you were either a participant or just a spectator. What made participating more meaningful than simply watching?

Reflect on God’s Word

• Read 2 Timothy 4:6-10. According to Paul, what three statements summarize how he lived his life? 
• What reason does Paul give for Demas leaving him and what do you think that means? 
• Read Matthew 28:19-20. What mission does Jesus give his followers in Matthew 28? 
• Read Matthew 5:16. According to this passage, why should believers do good works?

Go Deeper

• Jeff compared serving God to leaving the stands and joining the crew. What does that picture communicate to you?
• What are some "comfortable stands" that can keep Christians from fully engaging in God's mission? 
• Which statement from Paul ("I have fought the good fight," "I have finished the race," or "I have kept the faith") challenges you the most, and why?
• Where has God intentionally placed you right now (work, neighborhood, school, family)? How might he want to use you there? 
• Jeff said every big commitment to God is followed by many small "yeses." What small or big "yes" might God be asking from you today? 
• How does serving alongside others deepen friendships and spiritual growth? 
• What kind of legacy do you hope people describe at your funeral? What choices today will help build that legacy? 
• How can our small group encourage one another to move from cheering to participating?

Wrap Up

• What was a win for today’s meeting? Where did we see the Holy Spirit show up?
• Go around and share things you are thankful for as well as prayer requests. Then take turns praying for one another.
• Close by having the last person read this week’s verse to meditate on (Luke 15:20) and then pray: God, Thank you for inviting me to be part of what you're doing in the world. Give me the courage to leave the stands, trust your leading, and faithfully say "yes" to every opportunity you place before me. Help me live a life that points others to Jesus and leaves a legacy of faithfulness for your glory. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

VERSE TO MEDITATE ON AND MEMORIZE THIS WEEK

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16, NIV)

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE (BETWEEN MEETINGS)

Day 1 — Leave the Stands.

Read Genesis 16:13.

Reflect on Paul's confidence at the end of his life. Ask yourself: If my life ended today, what race would I say I'm running? Write down one area where God may be inviting you to step out of comfort and into action.

Day 2 — Faithfulness Over Comfort

Read 2 Timothy 4:6-8.

Compare Paul's faithfulness with Demas' love for the present world. Identify one comfort, distraction, or fear that may be preventing you from fully following God. Pray and surrender it to him.

Day 3 — Live on Mission

Read 2 Timothy 4:9-10.

Remember that Jesus sends every believer—not just pastors or church leaders. Pray for one person in your life who doesn't know Jesus, and intentionally encourage or connect with them today.

Day 4 — Shine Your Light

Read Matthew 28:19-20.

Your everyday acts of kindness and service can point people toward God. Perform one intentional act of generosity or service without expecting recognition.

Day 5 — Say Your Next "Yes".

Read Ephesians 2:10.

God has prepared good works specifically for you. Ask God, "What is my next yes?" Then take one concrete step—whether it's serving, inviting someone to church, joining a ministry, giving generously, or encouraging another believer.
