Spring Inventory by Joni Halpin
Spring asks me each year As the light green appears, And contrasts with my brown-tipped leaves of dark green Is there new growth in me to be seen?
Growth began under a blanket of white, Where’s the growth formed in the midst of my night?
The pruning was painful, old habits confessed The season of waiting much longer than wished But the old branch that’s wandered too far from the vine Can hinder the new growth that’s learned to abide
The young branch moves to the light for its growth And soaks in God’s wondrous grace notes But the all-purpose sun feeds my branches too Making the old continually new
The branch that has learned to abide in the vine Feels the nudge of the Spirit—by God’s design And so I’m reminded with this annual exam That I can’t go with You and stay where I am
