At “The Harbor,” our main goal is to create a safe place where students can come as they are, and be authentic, honest and real with both their peers and adult small group leaders.
Life is tough, and we all need a little help navigating through the stormy waters of Middle School, High School and the other “waves” that life rolls our way. We strive to help students learn healthy coping mechanisms in how to deal with anxiety and pain, all through the lens of a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Formerly called “Life Hurts God Heals” (or as we affectionately referred to it: LHGH), we have decided that as society shifts and the teen and social culture is constantly changing, a change in curriculum and name needed to progress with the times. Formerly considered an 8-step recovery program, we are moving toward a Large Group/Small Group format where we have new topics that are relevant to the local teens that we love and serve.
We want the groups to feel less like an 8-step program, and more like a fun, inviting environment where they can come and share authentically without having to worry about “saying the wrong thing” or being judged. God wants us to come as we are to Him, no matter what that may look like.
We chose “The Harbor,” because there are seasons in our lives where we can feel like we are being tossed around in a storm at sea. We may feel lost and ill-equipped to find a safe place to land. We may feel like we are at a complete loss as to how to handle the waves and the storms. But imagine with me for a moment that in the distance, there is a safe shore, with a lighthouse blasting a bright light. You see that light and follow it safely to shore. You may be a little broken, a little bruised and a little angry at your circumstances, but that light beckons you and brings you home to safety and restoration. Christ is our light, and He wants to guide us all safely to Himself. He wants to nurse us back to health and restore our souls and heal our wounds. At “The Harbor” the adult small-group leaders each have their own story of Christ’s rescue and redemption and seek to pay forward all the grace, love and mercy that Jesus has shown us. We want to equip our precious teens with life skills that will serve them long after they have left our doors.
We start back with our Fall semester on Thursday, August 25. We meet in the 281 Building at the Legacy campus every Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. LifeGroups provide dinner for the students every week, and then we have a short Large Group gathering before we break into small groups. Come check us out, we would love to have you!
