In the spirit of #LoveDoesTheUnexpected, people in our community are loving our neighbors in unexpected ways. Sometimes, loving our neighbors requires us to get out of our comfort zone and do something we didn’t even expect to do.
Chase Oaker Jennifer Schmitt found an unexpected way to love her neighbor, starting with a bottle of Crown Royal Vanilla and ending with an unexpected connection. Here is her story.
Hi, I’m Jennifer Schmitt from Sloan Creek. Love Does The Unexpected has been a great movement for me, giving me confidence to do things that I might otherwise not take the opportunity to do.
Stepping Out of Her Comfort Zone
About 18 months ago, I was walking my dogs in my neighborhood, and it was trash day, Thursday night. My neighbor at the end of the cul-de-sac, who I have attempted to befriend for the last seven years to no avail, pops out of her house and was throwing away an empty bottle of Vanilla Crown.
It just was on my heart that I should go to the liquor store, buy some Vanilla Crown Royal, and go visit my neighbor. And I thought, that’s crazy, this neighbor doesn’t even want to get engaged with me.
I finally say, “I give up God; I’m going to go to the liquor store.” Having God push me to step out of my comfort zone and take a chance to interact with her, even though over the last seven years, it’s not worked out.
Being the Light in Her Neighborhood
This was a day that she just felt so low and so unloved and uncared for. Love Does The Unexpected allowed me to be the light in someone’s life when there was only darkness. To give her reinforcement of she’s worth being loved.
Allow yourself to be the light. And to do something for someone that may change their day, change their year, or change the rest of their life.
Loving our neighbors is not as difficult as it may seem. Check out Love Does The Unexpected for simple, yet unexpected, ways we can love our neighbors.
