JEREMIAH PROJECT
Refugio Jeremías is a nonprofit striving to meet the needs of children in extreme poverty who live in and around Antigua, Guatemala. Refugio Jeremías provides a lunch meal everyday for the children and also teaches the children life skills. The lunch program not only provides a daily need, but also creates something consistent and solid that the children can count on. This consistency also requires the children to develop skills such as discipline, respect, and responsibility.
Along with the lunch itself, there are activities each afternoon for the children to come to, providing the opportunity to get to know each child as an individual and to begin building trust with him/her. The classes include educational curriculum for reading, writing, and arithmetic. The children also learn about hygiene and are required to brush their teeth and wash their hands.
After enrolling children in the program, the objective is to get to know the children, befriend them and mentor them—to let them know that someone cares. There are many excellent agencies to meet needs in Guatemala, and there are also substandard agencies. The goal is to be able to connect the children to the other agencies in the area that will be able to help the children and their families meet the needs that they encounter. The desire of Refugio Jeremías is to create a network of respectable, quality projects and then plug the children into organizations that best fit their needs. The project will seek various programs in each area of need to provide every child with the best opportunity to achieve their full potential. Every child deserves every opportunity to succeed, and to show each child that God does have a hope and a future planned for them.
Mission:
For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
This is the verse that started it all. It is the desire of the Jeremiah Project to do the things listed above and also teach Biblical principles so that one day a family or a child will come back and ask...."Why did you do this or why did you care so much?" and we will have the opportunity to say that we did this because of what Christ has done for us.
