Saint Patrick Group Guide

March 2024

  • Happy St. Patrick’s Day! What do you typically do to celebrate this holiday?
  • Here’s a list of 17 St. Patrick’s Day Traditions…any of them sound interesting to you? St. Patrick's Day Traditions
  • #11 on that list is “Church services honoring St. Patrick”, and that is what we did this weekend, as Jeff talked about the life of St. Patrick. Is there anything that stood out to you about his life, and why? For a refresher, you can look at the sermon notes on the Chase Oaks App.
  • Jeff also shared a lot of quotes from Patrick. Take turns reading these quotes:
    • “I was sixteen and knew not the true God, but in a strange land the Lord opened my unbelieving eyes, and I was converted.”
    • “Anything that happens to me, whether pleasant or distasteful, I ought to accept with contentment, giving thanks to God … who never disappoints.”
    • “It is not in my nature to show divine mercy toward the very ones who once enslaved me.”
    • “I had a vision in my dreams of a man who seemed to come from Ireland. His name was Victoricius, and he carried countless letters, one of which he handed over to me. I read aloud where it began: 'The Voice of the Irish.' And as I began to read these words, I seemed to hear the voice of the same men who lived beside the forest of Foclut … and they cried out as with one voice, 'We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.' I was deeply moved in heart and I could read no further, so I awoke.”
    • “Many friends tried to stop my mission. They said, ‘Why does this fellow waste himself among dangerous enemies who don't even know God?’”
    • “And I am certain of this: I was a dumb stone lying squashed in the mud; the Mighty and Merciful God came, dug me out and set me on top of the wall. Therefore, I praise him and ought to render him something for his wonderful benefits to me both now and in eternity.”
    • “For God gave me such grace, that many people through me were reborn to God and afterward confirmed and brought to maturity.”
  • Which quote can you relate to, and why?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 9:19-23. What does it mean when Paul says “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some”? What are some examples of this in our lives, and what are some limits that we should also recognize?
  • Read Luke 5:32. Who was Jesus’ mission aimed at? And how does that impact who our mission, both individually and as a church, is aimed at?
  • Read Acts 20:24. These were the words of Paul, who was the first great missionary, and St. Patrick lived that out as a great missionary to Ireland. As you look around your group, how have you seen someone in your group live into this mission? (This is a great opportunity to encourage and affirm one another!)
  • As we consider the life to St. Patrick, what are some ways we can further live into the mission God is calling all of us to, individually and as a church, to inspire people to follow Jesus and together change our world for good?
  • Share prayer requests and praises, and pray for one another.
